Today our task was to design and build a structure to support 3 plastic balls- bonus points for supporting them the highest off the table. Our building materials were 20 pieces of spaghetti and a glue gun- luckily I am no stranger to spaghetti construction having participated in games involving building with spaghetti and marshmallows a few times before.
I went for the approach of 'start building and see what happens'.
I was pleased with my structure as I was able to create something that was relatively stable but looked uneven and interesting- in fact one of the teachers pointed out that she liked the uneven-ness of it.
I feel I have learnt that you don't have to spend ages designing something to create an interesting outcome- just going straight in experimenting with the media you are using can yield interesting results.
I finished the task quite quickly so I used the rest of the time to go around taking photos of the goings on - which in my eyes is the more interesting thing!
I thought it was interesting how people's hands interacted with the intersecting lines of the spaghetti structures. I also liked how the wispy, stringy bits left behind by the glue gun added extra interest to the structures along with the bright colours of the balls.
We also tried shining a light through the sculptures which created interesting patterns on the walls which you could see becoming an interesting graphic.
